The IEYC is an internationally researched curriculum for learners aged 2-5+ years old, presented to schools through core documentation, practical materials and supporting resources.
Foundation 2:
A Progressive Pedagogy
The IEYC pedagogy foregrounds a repertoire of different approaches that each utilise multiple learning theories. The IEYC pedagogy is designed to guide teachers in the decisions they make as they lead learning, through their interactions with children and the dynamic environments they provide.
Foundation 3:
A Process To Facilitate Learning For All
The research on learning that guides the design of the International Curriculum leads to the conclusion that learning does not follow a single, uniform process, as it can look and feel different for everyone. However, all IEYC units of learning follow a specific Process to Facilitate Learning, with the child at the centre, which is structured to ensure that children’s activities, experiences and interactions are engaging, enjoyable and developmentally appropriate.
Foundation 4:
Globally Competent Learners
Children exist within an ‘environment of relationships’ (National Scientific Council on the Developing Child, 2004). It is within this environment that children increasingly become aware of their own intentions, feelings and thinking, and begin to understand that other people have motivations, beliefs and perspectives that are different from their own. This development of a sense of other is the basis of social interaction and an essential foundation in the development of international mindedness.
Foundation 5:
Knowledge, Skills And Understanding Are Taught, Learned And Assessed Differently
Across the International Curriculum, Knowledge, Skills and Understanding are all valuable and important enough to be included in our curriculum, and are sufficiently different to be taught, learned, and assessed differently. Whilst Knowledge, Skills and Understanding are sufficiently different, within the earliest years of life these differences can be difficult to separate, due to the holistic and mutually reinforcing nature of early learning.

Connected Learning
The process of learning and development is incremental and cumulative. Children’s early learning, through their experiences and interactions, is interconnected and mutually reinforcing; learning in one dimension supports and extends learning within and across the other dimensions.

Reflective Practices For Improving Learning
Fieldwork Education recognises that IEYC teachers are skilled practitioners, with a deep and comprehensive knowledge of the children in their class. This knowledge is used by teachers, before, within and after experiences, to analyse and adapt planning, provision, and practice through creative and strategic thinking.
